Chapter 7

"Geez, Jessica," Amy complained. "I can't believe you're spending so much time in the library." She shifted uneasily in the thick wooden chair and looked at all of the faces buried in textbooks and novels.

Lila nodded in agreement. "No kidding. You've been here more this week than all of your three years at Sweet Valley High—combined. It's starting to get a little creepy."

"Don't worry," Jessica reassured them. "I'm just really busy with the rally. And unfortunately, these are the only tables where I can spread out all my stuff."

A sharp shhhhh! pierced Jessica's ear. The girls turned in the direction of the sound. A freshman wearing tortoiseshell glasses, with about ten thick history books piled next to him, stared impatiently.

"See what we have to suffer through?" Lila asked disgustedly without lowering her voice.

"Sorry, but I've still got a million things to do and this is the only place to do them." Jessica thought back on the past week of planning. The Sweet Valley News had printed several articles, which had gotten great responses. Lots of volunteers had called or approached Jessica at school. She had spent more time on the phone than she could remember—which was saying a lot for Jessica—but it had really paid off. She'd already begun receiving pledge checks.

Jessica had even called Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff, Sam's parents. The conversation had been more painful for Jessica than she had thought it would be, but they were so supportive that by the time she hung up, she was more sure than ever that she was doing the right thing.

"The rally's this weekend, and I promise you'll never have to set foot in here again after that," Jessica reassured them.

"Well, you and I have got to get to cheerleading practice anyway," Amy said to Jessica. Jessica didn't acknowledge her friend; she had gone back to adding a column of numbers in her notebook. Amy turned to Lila. "You want to stick around and watch?" she asked. "We've got a great new cheer for the game this Saturday."

"No, I've got to get home. I want to be there when the dress designer comes to talk to Grace about restoring her wedding gown," Lila enthused. "She's wearing the same one she wore the first time around!"

"She could wear a burlap sack and look great!" Amy said.

Lila smiled broadly. "Daddy wouldn't stand for that! He's sparing no expense to make sure that this wedding day is flawless. I think he's trying to make up for what happened last time," she said, then casually waved her hand in the air. "See you guys later." She hurried out through the stacks.

"Are you coming?" Amy impatiently asked Jessica, who showed no signs that she would be leaving the library anytime soon.

"You go ahead. I'll be finished in a little while." Amy grabbed her gym bag and pom-poms and walked off with an exasperated sigh.

Jessica didn't even hear her leave. Everything about the rally had to be in order before Saturday. And Jessica was determined to make this more than just a dirt bike rally.
